Watercolor Workshop for Children (ages 6+)
This hands-on watercolor workshop introduces children to the materials, techniques, and joyful experimentation of watercolor painting. Designed for ages 6 and up, the session balances clear instruction with playful creative time so every child learns and finishes with their own completed painting.
What children will learn
Basic materials and care: brushes, paper types, palettes, and how to mix and dilute paints safely.
Core watercolor techniques: wet-on-wet, wet-on-dry, washes, gradients, lifting, and simple layering.
Color mixing and value: how to create different hues, tints, and tonal contrasts.
Composition and planning: simple sketching, focal points, and arranging elements on the page.
Creative expression: exploring texture, mark-making, and personal style while practicing control and patience.
Workshop structure
Welcome and demo: brief introduction to materials and a step-by-step demonstration of a simple painting.
Guided practice: children try specific techniques with instructor support and individual guidance.
Main project: students plan a small composition and complete a finished watercolor painting.
Sharing and positive feedback: group reflection, gentle critique, and encouragement to celebrate each child’s work.
Practical details

Duration: 90 minutes (adjustable for group needs)
Group size: small groups to ensure focused attention and individual help
Materials: all painting materials provided; children may bring an apron or wear clothes that can get paint on them
Outcome: each child takes home a finished watercolor painting
